DYN mentors employ a variety of online tools and resources in order to provide an authentic new media learning environment. RemixWorld is DYN’s private social networking website designed to leverage the affordances of new media to increase student engagement and extend youth and mentor collaborative opportunities. With a familiar interface and similar functionality to popular online communities, students are able to easily share and critique poems, graphic designs, songs, videos, and more. Mentors integrate the website into New Media Arts courses and after-school pods by asking students to post projects, journal entries, or questions. Mentors also model the social disposition on RemixWorld by posting original work, critiquing the work of others, and contributing to discussions. Students earn “Remix Dollars” for effective participation, virtual currency exchangeable for real world goods such as dedicated studio time and printing of student’s work on t-shirts.
